Stories ...

These are stories from some of our residents and thier families. Here you can read about real life experiences.

On behalf of Valetta Glover, Shirley's Daughter, Hellen Vallier, Shirley's sister, Reggie, Elvis, Techanna, Marcellus, Vontrice, Shirley's grandchildren and all of the family members and friends of Shirley Guyton: We graciously thank the staff at Jack Clark's Family who made a decision to care for Shirley as thier own "sister", no matter what circumstances Shirley had. The family was there to help and assist her in any situation that occured in her life and she did have many changes day after day. "Smiles." It was your spiritual empowerment, your moral and financial support, that always kept Shirley having order in her life. Especially, Denise Downing, President of Jack Clark's Family, who "made certain" that Shirley was comfortable throughout the years of her illness. Denise would say, "Give it to Shirley" and it would be just that. The executives and staff of Jack Clark's Family, especially: Evan, Wardell, Antonio, Peter, Teddy, and Larry, saw to it that all of Shirley's needs were met. No matter what time of day or night...the family took care of her. All she has to do was ask and you were there at her beck and call. No matter how big or small! We thank the family at the Whipple house. We thank the family at the Armitage house and we thank the family at the Potomac house, who tenderly cared for Shirley for the past ten years during her horrendous fight and battle with asthma and addiction. You saw her through it all. The "Family" visited her during the many times she was in the hospital. She could count on your smiling faces to show up! Again, we could never find enough words to express our gratitude: so on behalf of Shirley's family we say to the family over and over again. "THANK YOU!"

I used drugs for 30 years, losing everything, becoming homeless and not caring if I lived or died.  Coming to Jack Clark’s Family has given me a “normal” life filled with blessings and gratitude.

I’m grateful for Jack Clark’s Family.  I believed they saved my life.  I was hopeless, homeless and penniless.  They welcomed me with open arms and a structured program where I learned to love myself and others, giving that love and care back in service work to others.

I have had the pleasure of returning to a life of sanity, peace and happiness.  Although life is not a “bowl of cherries”, it is not what it used to be either.  With the guidance of my peers here at Jack Clark’s Family, I am able to live life as a responsible and accountable citizen of the community.  I know that this is a true blessing from Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.

I want to give back.  20 years ago, I was lost, all alone in a world full of hate, lies and anger.  My Higher Power guided me into a recovery home called Jack Clark’s Family.  With the help of angels, I have learned how to love, be responsible and become a productive member of society.  I will do all that I can do to give back to others.

I am a 52 year old male who has recovered from a life of addiction. I used drugs for 25 years. I came into recovery 11 years ago. I had a job, but I didn't have any money. I came into the family wearing a pair of stolen gym shoes and a pair of pants I had washed and worn for 13 days in a row in treatment. I now own my own home and am a part of a very successful recovery program. More importantly, today, I have dignity and respect for life.
